One thing on that checklist should be protecting your belongings with renters insurance. ![]() Once you’ve inspected, cleaned and removed everything from your unit, take pictures of each room for your records, as well as your landlord’s. Remove all outdoor belongings from patio, deck, terrace, balcony, yard, etc.Any damages upon moving out that were not documented during the initial Move In Inspection may result in some, or all, of your security deposit being withheld. Clear out all belongings from cabinets, closets, drawers, etc. Any damages agreed upon during the Move In Inspection will be repaired by the landlord within a mutually agreed upon time.Clean all light fixtures inside and out.Make sure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are working – replace batteries if necessary.Wipe down inside of drawers and cabinets.Sanitize bathtub, shower, sink and toilet.Remove grease, dust and dirt from the exhaust fan and overhead light.Run ice cubes, salt and cold water through the garbage disposal to clean out remnants of food.Clean out dishwasher, including around and inside the door.Wipe inside, underneath and behind refrigerator.Thoroughly clean stove and oven – remove drip pans to clean bottom surface.Clean inside and outside of microwave, including the filter underneath. ![]() Wipe cabinets in and out, as well as pantries and shelves.Make sure doors and locks work properly.Mend tears, holes or burn marks to curtains.Fix broken windows, window screens or blinds To help you on your way to rental bliss, and to be certain nothing will be forgotten, here’s our essential rental moving in checklist.Clean windows inside and out, including tracks.Repair and repaint any walls you may have damaged or repainted.Fill smaller holes with spackle and sand smooth.Remove hooks, ceiling hooks and mounted mirrors – properly patch holes.Brush out cobwebs from corners and ceilings.Wash down walls, especially areas above heaters and vents.Fix tears, holes or burn marks in carpets.To help avoid being in that group, thoroughly inspect every room and ask yourself: Is everything in working order?
